About the product
In December 2023, Nicole Eagan decided to close doors on Old World Salves. When Cheryl learned of this she immediately approached her to purchase several of the formulas. As of this writing, we have purchased Salve, Remove, and XZema. Our intent going forward is to formulate the remaining salves based on label ingredients and Cheryl's years of experience in herbal formulations.
The salves are going to be more vibrant as we are applying our own process to the herbs and oils. More of the herbal constituents are extracted into the oils and are therefore more vivid and potent!
Due to FDA regulations, we regret that we cannot be more specific about what our salves can do to help your body as it heals. I have added a page "New Here?" which allows you to search for common skin conditions and the salve which customers have given testimonies about.
We put a "Use By" date on each product. This is an approximation based on the stated use by date on the carrier oil. But we encourage you to sniff the product when you first use it and each time thereafter. You will know when the oils begin to go rancid and smell "off" like crayons, rather than unscented to slightly "sweet". When it goes "off", toss it. We suggest you only buy as much as you think you'll use before the end of the "use by" date.
We do not add any chemical preservatives. Olive oil has an excellent shelf life. We add Vitamin E, Rosemary Oleoresin, and/or Balm of Gilead, all of which have antioxidant properties. That being said:
- Always try to keep your oils and salves in a cool dark place.
- Keep lid on. This limits exposure to air which can speed rancidity.
- Try to only use a clean, DRY finger to apply the salves. You might even use a cotton swab (Q-Tip).
- Always avoid introducing water to your salve. Water encourages bacterial growth.
- We strongly encourage you to buy only as much as you might use in a year. If you do buy more to store, keep in the freezer.
We use organic oils and herbs 90% of the time. It's true we could label them organic per labeling standards but that means getting certifications which are not practical. The other 10% either are not considered an organic item, like Vitamin E or they are wildcrafted like our own home grown Calendula, Arnica, Plantain, Chickweed, and Echinacea. We are slowly adding other medicinal herbs to our "wild" yard as well.
